A Scenic Journey to Berggasthaus Ascher Cliff Restaurant in Switzerland: Brunch with Breathtaking Views

Starting a day with a memorable adventure and a delicious meal is one of the best ways to recharge. Last May, I took a morning trip from Zurich to the Ascher Cliff Restaurant in Switzerland, and it turned out to be an unforgettable experience. The combination of travel, hiking, and a unique breakfast at cliff restaurant made this trip truly special. Here’s how I got there, what I saw, and why this place deserves a spot on your travel list.

The Berggasthaus Äscher, nestled under a cliff, offers stunning views of the Swiss Alps and blends seamlessly into the rugged mountain scenery.

The Easy Hike to Ascher Cliff Restaurant

I was travelling by train from Zurich. After arriving at Ebenalp station, the real adventure begins. The hike to Ascher Cliff Restaurant is one of the best hiking trails in the area, suitable for most fitness levels. The path is well marked and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to reach the restaurant.

If you are travelling from another city / country, check your flight ticket to Zurich here :)

The trail winds through beautiful alpine meadows and rocky terrain. One of the highlights is passing through a natural cave, which adds a touch of mystery and excitement to the hike. The cave is wide and safe, with natural light filtering in from the entrance.

Just before reaching the restaurant, the path passes by an old mountain church. This small, historic chapel stands quietly against the backdrop of towering peaks, offering a peaceful spot to pause and reflect.

The hike is not strenuous, making it a perfect choice for those who want to enjoy nature without a challenging climb. The views along the way are spectacular, with sweeping panoramas of the valleys below and distant snow-capped mountains.

Breakfast at Cliff Restaurant: A Delightful Experience

Reaching Ascher Cliff Restaurant feels like stepping into a postcard. The restaurant is perched on a cliff edge, offering breathtaking views in every direction.

I chose to enjoy a cheese tart, a local specialty, paired with a rich hot chocolate. Ideal for a cool morning at altitude.

Eating breakfast at cliff restaurant here is more than just a meal; it’s an experience that connects you with the landscape. The panoramic views of the Swiss Alps create a serene atmosphere, making it easy to relax and savor every bite.

The restaurant’s design blends rustic charm with modern comfort. Red Chairs and outdoor seating allow guests to fully appreciate the scenery. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable, adding to the welcoming ambiance.

Why This Trip Stands Out

This trip combines several elements that appeal to travelers and hiking enthusiasts alike:

  • Accessibility: Easy to reach from Zurich using public transport.

  • Scenic Hiking: The best hiking trail to Ascher offers natural beauty without difficulty.

  • Unique Dining: Breakfast at cliff restaurant with stunning views is rare and memorable.

  • Cultural Touches: Passing through a cave and an old church adds history and adventure.

  • Photogenic Spots: Perfect for photography lovers who want to capture Swiss alpine beauty.

The blend of travel, nature, and food made this morning trip a highlight of my travels in Switzerland. It’s a great example of how a simple day trip can turn into a rich experience.

How to Get to Ascher Cliff Restaurant from Zurich

The journey begins in Zurich, a city well connected by Switzerland’s efficient train network. I boarded a train heading towards Wasserauen, which is the closest town to Ebenalp, the starting point for the cable car ride. The train ride takes about two hours, offering scenic views of Swiss countryside and rolling hills.

From Wasserauen, the cable car to Ebenalp station is just a short walk away. The cable car ride lasts about 10 minutes and climbs steeply, revealing stunning views of the Alpstein massif.

This route is straightforward and well signposted, making it accessible even for travelers new to the region. The combination of train, bus, and cable car is a perfect introduction to the Swiss public transport system, which is known for its punctuality and comfort.

If you also prefer stay in Zurich. You can check and book your hotel here.

If you enjoy hiking and breathtaking views, the Ascher Cliff Restaurant is a destination worth visiting. The journey from Zurich is smooth, the hike is manageable, and the food is delicious. Most importantly, the views from the cliff create a lasting impression.

Plan your trip early in the day to avoid crowds and enjoy a peaceful breakfast at cliff restaurant. Bring a camera, comfortable shoes, and a sense of adventure. This trip offers a perfect mix of nature, culture, and cuisine that will inspire your next Swiss adventure.
